The phrase “beauty with brains” sounds like a cliché but it best describes 22-year-old beauty queen, Melisa Chikerema who is the reigning Miss 21st Movement Zimbabwe and also the Miss ZimGold second princess.
Despite her titles, her genuine concern for the underprivileged is driving her to come up with unique charity projects to uplift her hometown.
“My passion lies in helping disadvantaged people in my community especially women in prisons. However, children come first, so I always initiate projects to mobilise resources for them too,” she said.
Chikerema has for the past few months engaged local businesses, politicians and individuals to source donations for Bindura Prision Services, Amai Mugabe Children’s Home in Mazowe and Good Hope Children’s Home in Bindura.
She recently donated sanitary wear to female prisoners in Bundura as well as groceries and clothing to underprivileged children.
Her latest move has seen her joining forces with like-minded youths – Team Bindura – whose collective vision of empowering the community is in line with her cause.
“I have no intentions of stopping my charity work even after my reigns as beauty queen end.
“This is why I have become part of the youthful group that is making a difference in Bindura,” she said.
She said together with Team Bindura, they have been reaching out to an even wider audience.
She hopes that in due cause, she can rewrite the beautiful story of her town.
“In previous years, Bindura’s image has been marred by negativity because of prostitution among other crimes. We hope that we can bring out the positivity that the town and its people have to offer,” she said.
Chikerema is a qualified office administrator from Trust Academy. She is looking forward to enrolling with the University of Bindura this year.
Her inspiration comes from influential women who have worked their way to making a positive impact in the lives of people.
