Beer Brawl Horror – Old Man Burnt After Homestead Fight

B-Metro Reporter

A NKAYI man’s drunken rage turned a beer-drinking session into a fierce fight that ended with an elderly man badly burnt.
Phumuza Ncube (39) from Mpatshazwa Village under Chief Sikhobokhobo will spend eight months behind bars after being convicted of assaulting 65-year-old Gilbert Moyo in a violent beer dispute that shocked villagers.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the fight broke out on June 26, 2025, at Moyo’s homestead, where the two men were drinking beer. Ncube lost his marbles when he was reprimanded for throwing a tripod cooking stand.
“The offender became violent after being cautioned and struck the victim on the ribs with a log before pushing him onto the hearth, causing serious burns,” said the NPAZ.

The stunned villagers rushed to Moyo’s aid before reporting the matter to the police, leading to Ncube’s arrest. Moyo was taken to Mbuma Mission Hospital, where he received treatment for the burns and bruises.
Though Ncube was initially charged with attempted murder, the court reduced it to assault after considering mitigating circumstances. He was sentenced to 16 months in jail, with eight months suspended on condition of good behaviour.

In its public warning, the NPAZ reminded communities that alcohol-fuelled violence can have devastating consequences.
“Members of the public are warned against resorting to violence in resolving misunderstandings. Such acts have devastating consequences and can easily turn fatal. We encourage communities to exercise restraint and seek mediation or police assistance where conflicts arise,” the NPAZ added.
