Mashonaland Central province liberation war hero, Cde Bernard Nyangoni Chakanyuka was yesterday laid to rest at his farm in Mazowe where hundreds of Zanu PF supporters, friends and family came to pay tribute.
Cde Nyangoni who was a member of the National Consultative Assembly (NCA) at the time of his death was given a befitting send off after being conferred with a liberation war hero status.
Addressing mourners on Saturday, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Captain (Rtd) Christopher Magomo said the service rendered by Cde Nyangoni remains a legacy of the Zanu PF party.
“Today, we gather here to bid farewell to a true liberation hero, Cde Bernard Nyangoni Chakanyuka, whose unwavering dedication and remarkable contributions have left an indelible mark on the history of Mazowe District, Mashonaland Central, and our beloved nation. We come together to honour his memory and pay tribute to his extraordinary life as a dedicated cadre of our esteemed party Zanu PF,” said Cde Magomo.
He narrated and recognized the contributions and exploits made by Cde Nyangoni in various political spheres during and after the liberation struggle.
“Cde Chakanyuka’s political journey began as a war collaborator, operating in Mazowe District, where he played a pivotal role in the liberation struggle that freed our country from the clutches of colonial oppression.
“Cde Chakanyuka continued to serve our nation with distinction. From 1994 to 2004, he served as a councillor for Mazowe Rural District Council, tirelessly working to address the needs of the community and improve the lives of its residents.
“During the same period, Cde Chakanyuka also held the position of ZANU PF Provincial Youth League Treasurer.”
Cde Magomo thanked President Mnangagwa for according him the liberation war hero status.
Meanwhile, provincial party chairperson Cde Kazembe Kazembe also paid tribute to the works done by Cde Nyangoni.
“He was a pioneer in the politics of the province with unwavering loyalty towards the party, his wisdom and integrity preserved him as a rare breed of a politician hence we are gathered today to honour his works as a liberation war hero,”
Cde Nyangoni died on Wednesday after succumbing to kidney failure.
He was 70 and is survived by his nine children and grandchildren.
