Benefits of Karate

Coach Kelly Fitness Correspondent

It is our responsibility to promote a healthy lifestyle in our kids because substance misuse is on the rise among youngsters.

Some youngsters take drugs due to boredom, peer pressure, and a lack of awareness of the value of taking care of their bodies.

To prevent our children from leading unhealthy lifestyles, it is important to model and support good behaviour from an early age. One of the best ways to avoid an unhealthy lifestyle is to teach kids the importance of fitness and exercise.

The school holidays have arrived and Invictus Fitness Centre at Westgate Shopping Centre has a holiday package for primary and high school students.

The Kids Fit package is going for US$30 for the month of August for kids 18 and under. This gives access to gym facilities and classes.

There will be kids classes conducted by seasoned trainers in karate, dance, aerobics, and gymnastics classes from 1200-1300hrs every Wednesday and Saturday (check the class schedule to see which classes are done each week).

This week we will be focusing on karate: a great way to build skills and confidence for young people.

Karate is a martial art that has been practiced for centuries in Japan. It is a great way for young people to develop skills and confidence in a safe and structured environment.

Here are some of the benefits of training in karate at a young age:

Developing discipline:  Karate teaches young people the importance of discipline. They learn to follow instructions, respect their instructors, and work hard to achieve their goals. This discipline can carry over into other areas of their lives, such as school, sports, and relationships.

Developing self-esteem: Karate can help young people develop a strong sense of self-esteem. They learn that they are capable of achieving anything they set their minds to. This can lead to increased confidence in all areas of their lives.

Improving  focus: Karate requires young people to focus on the task at hand. This can help them improve their focus in school and other activities.

Total behavioural change: Karate can help young people develop positive behaviours such as respect, responsibility, and teamwork. It can also help them to overcome negative behaviours such as aggression and violence.

Improving confidence: Karate can help young people improve their confidence in their ability to defend themselves. This can be especially important for girls, who are often the targets of bullying and violence.

Improving self-defence techniques: Karate teaches young people how to defend themselves against physical attacks. This can give them peace of mind and the confidence to stand up for themselves.

Fitness: Karate is a great way for young people to get fit. It is a full-body workout that can help them improve their strength, flexibility, and coordination.

Scholarships: Some Karate schools offer scholarships to students who perform well in athletics. This can be a great way to help young people pay for college or other post-secondary education.

How to get started in karate

You can start by signing up for a trial class. This will allow you and your child to see if karate is a good fit for you. If you decide to continue with karate, you will need to purchase a karate uniform (called a gi) and a belt.

Karate classes typically meet once or twice a week. Each class will last for about an hour. You will learn karate techniques during class, such as punches, kicks, and blocks. You will also learn about karate philosophy and history.

Karate is a challenging but rewarding martial art. It can help young people develop important skills and confidence that will benefit them in all areas of their lives.

Here are some additional tips for getting started in karate:

  • Talk to your child about their interest in karate and what they hope to get out of it.
  • Visit the karate school and observe a class. This will give you a chance to see the instructor and the students in action.
  • Talk to the instructor about your child’s needs and goals.
  • Encourage your child to participate in karate classes regularly.
  • Be patient and supportive. Learning karate takes time and effort.

Karate is a great way for young people to develop important skills and confidence. If you are looking for a way to help your child reach their full potential, karate is a great option.
