LONDON. — Christian Benteke will become Liverpool’s latest signing after the club’s owners backed manager Brendan Rodgers by triggering the strikers £32,5million release clause. Benteke has reportedly agreed personal terms ahead of his £32,5million move to Liverpool. Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers had made the Belgium international his top striker target this summer.
Aston Villa had refused to sell for less than Benteke’s £32,5m release clause during negotiations between the two clubs.
But Liverpool have now matched that fee, with the 24-year-old expected to become Rodgers’ seventh signing of the summer.
And according to sources in Belgium, Benteke has already agreed personal terms and is set to complete his move this weekend.
“I think they’ve already agreed terms; so, that won’t be a problem. I think it’s just formalities that need to be done,” Belgian journalist Kristoff Terruer said.
“I’m told that the deal will be done before Monday.
Rodgers identified the Belgium forward as the player to bolster his goal-shy squad and the onus will now be on the Liverpool manager to deliver the results on the pitch next season.
Benteke (24) will become Liverpool’s second most expensive player after £35m Andy Carroll, replacing fellow new boy Roberto Firmino who signed for £29m earlier in the summer.
Benteke still has two years left on his contract at Villa.— The Daily Express.
