IT APPEARS Chicken Inn goalkeeper Donovan Bernard’s all-time best record which helped him claim the Golden Glove award last season will not be beaten at the end of this campaign.
Bernard became the first goalkeeper to record 20 clean sheets in the history of the domestic Premiership.
That rare feat earned him the Golden Glove award.
There are now three games to go before the end of the championship race and Simba Bhora ‘keeper William Thole is leading the Golden Glove race with 15 clean sheets.
Thole has not featured in the champions’ last two fixtures but even if he plays and collects three more clean sheets, the best he can get is 18 clean sheets.
If Thole wins the Golden Glove race, the Malawi international will also become the first foreign goalkeeper to achieve this feat.
It has been a regrettable season for Chicken Inn, who are flirting with relegation, but Bernard has recorded 12 clean sheets, which means he still has a chance to finish on 15.
“Last season was one of the most memorable seasons of my career and a lot of things happened and setting that record was a huge milestone for me and everyone who has played a part in my career,” said Bernard.
“Obviously, just like anyone, it’s my wish to see that record remaining in place for a long time and it also helps understand how important such records can be.”
He added:
“I haven’t been thinking about the possibility of being in the mix for the Golden Glove because we have a huge task at hand as a club.
“We are focusing on surviving relegation. Individual accolades don’t count when the team is relegated and the pain of losing our status in the PSL will haunt us forever if we fail to collect the expected results in our remaining games.”
