TWO gold panners from Chikuti area in Hurungwe are facing murder charges after they allegedly fatally assaulted a colleague following a dispute at a beer drinking binge. Vengai Chipanera (28), of Zinara Gold Claim and Nicholas Charwadza (30), of D-Troop Gold Claim last week, appeared before Karoi resident magistrate Mr Robson Finsin charged with the murder of a colleague (name not supplied) also of the same area. The court advised the duo to seek bail at the High Court because it has no jurisdiction over murder cases.
Allegations are that on August 21 this year, a group of gold panners were drinking beer at Joze Gold Claim when an altercation involving deceased’s brother-in-law (name also not supplied) erupted.
Seeing that the two accused, including three others still at large, were assaulting his brother-in-law, deceased intervened to stop the fight. As punishment for rescuing his brother-in-law, who by then had escaped, it is alleged the five started assaulting the now deceased, who eventually bled to death after being stabbed in the right arm with a sharp object.
