Big Fish Promotions to fundraise for boxing tourney

Sports reporter
BIG FISH Boxing Promotions is set to stage a fund-raising dinner in Harare on 20 June with the aim of raising funds towards hosting a regional boxing tournament on 26 July at a yet to be disclosed venue. This would be Bigfish Boxing Promotions’ first international bout following its official launch in March in Bulawayo. The event is expected to attract the crème dela crème of the regional heavyweight boxers from Botswana, Zambia and South Africa, who will trade leather with their Zimbabwean counterparts.

Bigfish Boxing Promotion’s president Mordecai Donga said tickets for the dinner were already on sale in Harare.

“The dinner will be to unveil our team patrons, our plans for the remainder of the year and to raise funds to stage the international event next month. In the mean time tickets are being sold in the capital but there are arrangements to have some of them sold in Bulawayo,” he said.

Donga said they wanted to bring about professionalism in boxing while taking the sport back to its glory days. “We want Zimbabwe boxing to reclaim its status of yesteryear and if possible take it to the highest standards achievable for the benefit of our upcoming athletes,” said Donga, a former Zimbabwe middleweight boxing champion.

In a bid to embrace sports tourism, Donga said they would invite Ministers of Sport and Tourism, a bid to market the country, while at the same time hoping that boxing would get international recognition.

“We have invited Walter Mzembi (Tourism Minister) and Andrew Langa (Sport, Arts and Culture) to the fund-raising dinner. We hope to work with their ministries in order to achieve our goals in developing boxing in Zimbabwe,” he said.

The fees for the dinner are pegged at $80 per person and $750 per table of 10.
