Bulawayo-based comedy powerhouse Umahlekisa Entertainment is gearing up for a vibrant and event-packed 2025, setting the stage for a year that promises to elevate Zimbabwean comedy to greater heights.

Leading the charge is the much-anticipated Learnmore Jonasi on Coming from America show in Bulawayo, slated for August 23. The event will mark the homecoming of Learnmore Jonasi, Zimbabwe’s comedy export who made waves as a finalist on America’s Got Talent (AGT) in 2024, a feat that placed him firmly in the global spotlight.

“Jonasi is the biggest Zimbabwean comedian right now. Making it to the AGT finals is no small achievement. He’s touring the world, and that’s the kind of momentum our comedy industry needs, a large pool of talented comics to inject variety and spark healthy competition,” said Ntandoyenkosi Van Moyo, director of Umahlekisa Entertainment.

The August showcase, headlined by Jonasi and hosted by Moyo himself, will also feature an impressive local line-up, including Zwe Hlabangana, Ble Mutandwa, Mbongeni Ignatius, D’Juni, and General Lesley, a move aimed at reinforcing local comedy talent and expanding their exposure.

Another major highlight for the year is the Umahlekisa Comedy Awards (Umaca), originally set for December 7 last year but postponed. Moyo assured that the awards are firmly back on the calendar for 2025 and are already in the planning phase.

“The Umaca will definitely happen this year. We’re working behind the scenes, engaging sponsors and partners. We’re thrilled to see the comedy scene thriving with more shows around Bulawayo. A lot of young comedians are coming up, some of whom we helped groom at grassroots level, and that’s a clear sign of growth and our impact on the industry,” Moyo said.

The organisation is also expanding its footprint beyond traditional venues. In an innovative move to bring arts to the people, Umahlekisa has introduced “Side Show”, a performance platform set up outside Barbourfields Stadium during Highlanders FC home games.

“Artistes often complain about lack of support, while audiences say they don’t know the artistes. By taking the talent directly to the people, literally, we’re addressing both concerns. We’re blending sports and arts to create a more vibrant entertainment culture while boosting arts tourism,” explained Moyo.

Fans can also look forward to another fiery edition of Umahlekisa’s Roast, which has become a cult favourite for lovers of satire and sharp wit, as well as a fresh rollout of both physical and digital comedy experiences throughout the year. — @MbuleloMpofu
