THE Zimbabwe national women’s cricket team captain, Mary-Anne Musonda, has earned global recognition after her recent exploits against Ireland.
She received a sponsorship deal from the world’s leading bat manufacturer, Keeley Cricket. The 30-year-old star scripted her name into history last month after becoming the first Zimbabwean female player to score an ODI century.
Musonda’s feat inspired Zimbabwe’s four-wicket victory over Ireland, in their first official ODI match.
She will join an array of some of the world’s leading cricketers, who have a relationship with Keely’s handcrafted cricket willows.
Keeley cricket bats are handmade in East Sussex. The company have a reputation of producing some of the best bats in the UK and are the go-to for many International and County cricketers.
Other leading cricket figures, who have a relationship with the British company, include Indian superstar Virat Kholi, Chris Gayle, Jason Holder, Liam Livingstone, and Rashid Khan.
Musonda will also be allocated cricket pads, gloves and helmets continuously over a period, with the possibility of playing her club cricket in the UK, in the next British summer. The sponsorship was facilitated by Barbados-born Winston Weeks, a naturalised Briton, who has strong links to this country. Weeks, who now lives in London, played and coached cricket in Zimbabwe in the ‘80s and ‘90s, while recently he has facilitated short-term contracts for Zimbabwean cricketers, to feature on the UK’s club circuit. — Zim Sport Live
