SEVEN own goals have been scored in the ongoing Castle Premier Soccer League season that reached its halfway mark a fortnight ago before taking a one-week sabbatical.
Three own goals were scored by Donald Dzinyai (Dynamos), Meki Meki (Chegutu Pirates), Carlton Munzabwa (Bikita Minerals) in Week Two when they took on Hwange, ZPC Kariba and Yadah Stars respectively.
Kudzai Chigwida of Ngezi Platinum Stars scored an own goal when they played against Simba Bhora in a Week 11 encounter. Next to score in his net was Chegutu Pirates’ Rueben Machaya when they faced Herentals in a Matchday 15 fixture.
As if that was not enough, up next were the trio of Erica Mafirenyika, Leo Hofisi (both TelOne) and Chicken Inn’s Lincoln Mangaira (Chicken Inn). CAPS United’s William Manondo is the league’s leading top goal scorer with eight goals under his name in a campaign that has produced 286 goals.
In the2021/ 2022 season, Manondo won the Golden Boot Award and he was named Soccer Star of the Year first runner-up after tapping in 17 goals.
Manondo who is the Chibuku Super Cup tournament all-time top goal scorer joined Makepekepe a couple of seasons ago from now Northern Region side Harare City.
In the 2021/ 2022 campaign, Manondo was three goals ahead of former FC Platinum’s attacking midfielder, Walter Musona who was the second top-scorer with 14 goals, four ahead of third top scorer Delic Murimba of Ngezi Platinum Stars who netted 13.
In the current season, two players Lynoth Chikuhwa —Highlanders — and Evans Katema — Bikita Minerals — are tied on seven goals.
Former Warriors poster boy Khama Billiat, who now does duty for Yadah Stars, is on a six-goal bracket together with Never Rauzhi, who has joined Highlanders on a six months loan from Bulawayo Chiefs, Jaun Mutudza (FC Platinum), Tymon Machope (Simba Bhora) and Takunda Benhura (Ngezi Platinum Stars). The second-half of the season starts on Saturday.
