Bindura steps up cholera fight

BINDURA Town Council has purchased new sewer pipes and is currently working to boost water supplies as part of measures to combat cholera.

In an interview, Bindura Town Clerk Ms Evelyn Madziire said council had stocked pipes to use in the case of emergencies.

“Rather than starting to run around when there are sewer pipe bursts, we have in stock extra pipes so that we guard communities against cholera. In the event that we hear of bursts, our staff will just take those pipes and replace the damaged ones within hours,” she said.

The municipality, she added, had also purchased a new refuse compactor, which is supported by two tractors that are routinely collecting waste.

Work is also underway to clear drainage canals and create culverts in gravel roads to facilitate the flow of water during the rainy season.

Bindura has recorded a single cholera case since the outbreak of the disease in February.
