THE Government has approved the renaming of the Bindura University of Science Education to Bindura University of Science, Innovation and Technology.
The decision was announced following a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday where Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development Minister Dr Frederick Shava presented the proposal.
In his post-Cabinet briefing, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister, Dr Zhemu Soda said the latest development aligns with the university’s identity with its expanded mandate of driving innovation, scientific research and technological development.
He said Cabinet noted that the new name better reflects the institution’s strategic direction and its evolving role in advancing Zimbabwe’s innovation and industrialisation agenda.
“The new name, Bindura University of Science, Innovation and Technology, sufficiently projects the three pillars that define the institution’s present and future strategic trajectory, which are Science, Innovation and Technology,” said Dr Soda.
The minister said the change is expected to reinforce the university’s focus on producing graduates equipped with skills that support research, innovation and technology-driven economic transformation.
The renaming also aligns with the Government’s broader higher and tertiary education reforms, which seek to position universities as centres of innovation, industrialisation and problem-solving through research and the commercialisation of knowledge.
Over the years, Zimbabwe’s universities have increasingly embraced the Education 5.0 heritage-based philosophy, which expanded the traditional mandates of teaching, research and community service to include innovation and industrialisation, enabling institutions to contribute directly to national development.
Once the necessary legal and administrative processes are completed, the institution will officially operate as Bindura University of Science, Innovation and Technology.
