A BINGA man (65) will spend 10 years in prison after he was found guilty of attempting to rape a seven-year-old while she slept.

According to a statement by the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, the convicted rapist appeared at the Hwange Magistrates’ Court on Monday where he was found guilty and slapped with a 10-year jail sentence.

“On the 29th of June 2024, at midnight, the complainant (7) was sleeping in her bedroom alone when the accused person entered her room. The complainant heard some movement in her blankets.

“This prompted the accused person to cover her face with a blanket. He began to undress the complainant who shouted for help and her father came to the rescue,” reads the statement.

The complainant, however, did manage to identify the accused person before he fled the scene with the matter being reported to the police, leading to the accused person’s arrest.

“He was found guilty and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment,” reads the statement.
