THE just-ended Binga South Constituency Heroes Day soccer and netball tournament has been declared a success by the organisers.
The three-day tournament ran from August 9 to August 13.
In the football category, Bafana Bafana soccer team from Saba (Ward 13) walked away with the top spot, winning a new kit and a trophy.
Redsea from Mupambe Sichimnwali Village came second, with Shooting Stars from Saba Ward third, while Green Arrows from Lubanda Village completed the top four.
The three teams won various prizes for their efforts.
In the netball category, Lusulu Queens were the champions.
Saba Stars, Hot Spears from Chinonge Area and Magumeni from Lusulu were also given cash and balls for their efforts.
“It was a good tournament which helped our youths celebrate the country’s heroes in a very productive way. We had 13 soccer teams and 10 netball teams,” said Noah Mumpande, the tournament organiser.
Mumpande said various stakeholders supported the tournament with education awareness on the negative effects of drug and substance abuse and early child marriages.
He said Binga had not been left behind in drug and substance abuse, as illicit cheap beer and mbanje were destroying young lives.
“Among other stakeholders, we had the Zimbabwe Republic Police, who conducted crime awareness. We want our youths to benefit from the empowerment programmes being rolled out by the Second Republic under President Mnangagwa to Binga, but they cannot do anything meaningful if they destroy themselves with drugs and substances,” he said.
Mumpande said the tournament would be held annually, with increased team participation and rewards.
Besides the sports, the crowds were entertained by various artists, who included Lubu Muchesu, a BaTonga dance group which promotes BaTonga culture.
Zambian artist Money Micho did not pitch up due to elections in the neighbouring country.
