In many urban homes, birthdays are marked with lavish gifts, designer outfits, expensive smartphones and exotic holidays.
For countless young people growing up in Zimbabwe’s rural communities, however, such celebrations remain a distant dream, with birthdays often passing unnoticed.
That is why a simple birthday cake became an unforgettable gift for 2026 Miss Rural Zimbabwe Manicaland contestant Vanessa Mutambaneshiri.
The aspiring beauty queen was overwhelmed with emotion after receiving her first-ever birthday cake at the age of 23 — a touching moment that underscored the pageant’s mission to celebrate and empower young women from rural communities.
Born on July 28, 2004, at Zimunya Clinic, Mutambaneshiri was raised and educated in rural Manicaland, where birthday celebrations were never part of her upbringing.
The aspiring model was left speechless when Miss Rural Zimbabwe patron and diplomat Honourable Nyasha Chikwinya, together with pageant founder Sipho Mazibuko, surprised her with a birthday cake, chocolates and roses to mark her special day.
“I can’t thank these two special people enough, Hon Chikwinya and Sipho Mazibuko, for making my day so special,” said the emotional model.
“In my life, I had never experienced anything like this because it is rare for rural models to be treated in such a special way.
“I will forever cherish this moment because it means so much to me.”
Mutambaneshiri said she felt honoured to be celebrated on her birthday.
“This means a lot to me because nothing like this has ever happened before. Growing up in the Zimunya communal lands under Chief Zimunya, I never imagined that one day I would be surrounded by such amazing people celebrating my life in such a unique way.
“It can only be God who has made these wonders possible.”
She added: “I was also humbled when our patron and mother figure, Sipho Mazibuko, surprised me by splashing me with water as part of the birthday celebrations.
“I thoroughly enjoyed the day because she later took me to KFC.
“We had so much fun, and I will always cherish these memories for years to come.”
Hon Chikwinya encouraged young women from rural communities to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the Miss Rural Zimbabwe pageant.
“Zimbabwe has many talented and beautiful women living in rural areas. By uplifting them, we are recognising their value and reminding them that they matter.
“The importance of this programme is to celebrate rural beauty and empower young women from our communities,” she said.
Chikwinya’s remarks come as Mazibuko prepares to launch the Miss Rural Africa pageant in September in Harare, an initiative expected to attract several African diplomats and other distinguished guests.
According to Mazibuko, the launch of Miss Rural Africa will coincide with the crowning of Mr and Miss Rural Zimbabwe 2026 at Heritage Village along Solomon Mujuru Road in Harare.
The event will also celebrate outstanding models from Zimbabwe’s rural communities and is expected to attract a large audience, including policymakers, traditional leaders and stakeholders committed to rural development and women’s empowerment.
