Work on the rehabilitation of the $24 million road linking Ngundu and Tanganda has started after the private company engaged by Government to do the work, Bitumen World, moved on site.
The 200km project is the culmination of a private-public partnership by Government, Tongaat Hulett and Green Fuel.
Chipinge South Member of Parliament Cde Enock Porusingazi said work on the first section of the road would be completed in 30 days.
“We are very happy that Government and its partners Tongaat Hulett and Green Fuel have started rehabilitating the Ngundu-Tanganda Highway, which had deteriorated into a stretch of potholes,” said Cde Porusingazi.
“Bitumen World started working on a 33-kilometre stretch being funded by Government. We understand they will cover one kilometre per day, meaning that by the end of February they would have finished the first segment, which is extremely damaged.”
Green Fuel, he said, would fund the repair of another section of the road and Tongaat Hulett will deal with the last lap to Ngundu Halt on the Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway.
Chiredzi West Member of Parliament Cde Darlington Chiwa applauded the private-public partnership (PPP) and encouraged other players to emulate the fuel and sugar processing giants to enhance infrastructure development.
He said the road would unlock more economic value for the country since it linked Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi.
