BIYA and Friends were crowned champions of the New Era Films (NEF) Under-10 Football Tournament after edging Achazia Academy 2-1 in an entertaining final played at Hartsfield Rugby Ground yesterday.
The tournament brought together some of Bulawayo’s promising young football talent, with eight teams battling for honours in a competition that showcased skill, discipline and the bright future of grassroots football.
Biya and Friends lived up to expectations throughout the day, producing impressive performances before capping their campaign with a hard-fought victory over a determined Achazia Academy side in the final.
Achazia Academy put up a spirited fight and pushed the eventual champions all the way, but Biya and Friends held their nerve to secure a 2-1 win and lift the trophy.
The battle for third place was equally competitive, with Young Flying Stars Sports Academy Team A (YFSSA-A) overcoming Busters to finish on the podium.
YFSSA-A produced a disciplined display in the third-place play-off to defeat Busters and claim the bronze medal position.
Several other teams also left a positive impression during the tournament. Heany Junction Academy, Mountain Climbers, Brazilians and Young Flying Stars Sports Academy Team B (YFSSA-B) all showcased their talent and enthusiasm, contributing to a successful day of youth football.
The tournament was characterised by exciting matches, enthusiastic support from parents and guardians, and displays of sportsmanship from the young players.
Organisers described the event as a success, highlighting the importance of creating competitive platforms for children to develop their football skills from an early age.
The competition also provided young players with an opportunity to gain match experience, build confidence and interact with peers from other academies while underlining the growing strength of junior football development in Bulawayo, with several talented youngsters demonstrating the potential to become the stars of tomorrow.
