SOUTH Africa-based Zimbabwean singer Leslie Muleya, popularly known as Black Diva, has released a new dancehall single, Dlali Ngoma, following a collaboration with Harare-based producer Ray.
The Insiza-born artiste travelled from South Africa to Harare specifically to record the track after Ray approached her with a demo that immediately caught her attention.
Black Diva said the song celebrates music, talent, culture and freedom of expression, while encouraging listeners to embrace their identities and express themselves without limitations.
She said the release was also intended to highlight how African music can transcend geographical boundaries and bring people together.
“Dlali Ngoma is a celebration of music, talent, culture and the power of expression. The song is about enjoying music, embracing who you are and allowing yourself to shine without limitations.
“Beyond entertainment, I also want the song to remind people that music has no boundaries and that African talent deserves to be celebrated across borders,” she said.
The singer described her collaboration with Ray as an important milestone in her musical journey, saying it allowed her to explore a different creative environment while bringing her South African musical influences to the project.
“Working with a Zimbabwean producer gave me an opportunity to experience a different musical environment while bringing my own South African flavour into the project. This collaboration is more than just recording a song; it’s about building relationships, creating connections and opening doors across Africa,” she said.
While the collaboration brought her to Harare, Black Diva said she was equally determined to use the release to shine a spotlight on musical talent from Matabeleland, particularly Bulawayo.
She said the region had a wealth of musical talent that deserved greater recognition and exposure beyond its borders.
“I am not just introducing Black Diva, I am telling people to take notice and know that Matabeleland and Bulawayo have talent,” she said.
The artiste said the reception she had received in Harare had been encouraging, with listeners responding positively to the new release.
She hopes to build on this reception by establishing connections with music promoters, fans and other industry players as she seeks to strengthen her presence in Zimbabwe’s music industry.
Looking ahead, Black Diva said Dlali Ngoma marked the beginning of a broader plan to collaborate with more Zimbabwean artistes and producers.
“I believe Dlali Ngoma is just the beginning of something bigger. I’m open to working with more Zimbabwean artists, producers and creatives because I believe that when African artists come together, we create opportunities for one another and take our music to greater heights,” she said.
Born at Shangani Mine in Insiza District, Matabeleland South, Black Diva developed her passion for music through school choirs before pursuing a professional career.
She has since explored various genres, including dancehall, hip-hop, Afro and Amapiano.
Among her notable releases is Thilo Lilo, featuring Slim Vevo and Rebo Dee.
