Black Mambas still stuck, draw curse drags on

BLACK Mambas remain deep in the relegation fight after recording their 13th draw of the season in the Zimbabwe Women’s Premier Soccer League. Their 1–1 stalemate with Harare City at Gwanzura Stadium highlighted both their resilience and their ongoing struggle to convert draws into wins.

Fellow uniformed side Black Rhinos Queens were also held, squandering a two-goal lead in a dramatic 2–2 draw with Maningi YSA at One Commando.

For Mambas, the draw nudges them up to 14 points — a significant improvement from the three they had at the halfway stage. Yet, the police side still sit second from bottom, with their survival hopes hinging on their ability to finally turn momentum into victories.

Rhinos coach Portia Chihota, was furious after her side switched off.

“Our players relaxed. They thought they had already won. Our opponents turned up the heat and ended up scoring two goals. We had to work harder after they drew level, but it was too late,” she said.

She admitted her squad had learned a painful lesson.

“It’s not over until the final whistle. We should never have taken our feet off the pedal when we were 2–0 up.”

Elsewhere, bottom-placed Red Buffaloes were hammered 6–0 by Sheasham Queens and remain stuck on a single point. Chapungu Queens bounced back from their defeat to Rhinos last weekend with a commanding 5–2 win over Faith Drive Academy. Edline Mutumbani and Ethel Chinyerere each netted twice, while veteran striker Rudo Neshamba sealed the win in the 90th minute.

Faith Drive had opened the scoring through Linda Rakabopa in the 4th minute, with Merindah Mapasure pulling another back later on. Chapungu manager Theodora Chabika hailed her team’s response.

“It was a great game of character as the girls bounced back from last week’s setback. We’re happy to have put in a commanding performance and collected maximum points,” she said.
Mpopoma Sports Academy’s 10-match unbeaten run came to an end with a narrow 1–0 defeat to Kwekwe Queens.
