SOUTH Africa’s tribal house duo, Black Motion, showed that they are a force to reckon with as they put up a spirited performance at Hartsfield Rugby Grounds in Bulawayo on Saturday night. The group, that has churned out hits such as Rainbow and Fortune Teller, got the hundreds that had gathered into a celebratory mood.
The show kick started the summer season and got people into the festive mood. Wearing their signature black flat hats, the duo of Robert “DJ Murda” Mahosana and percussionist Thabo “Smol” Mabogwane, got on stage after 1:30AM amid a rapturous applause from the crowd.
DJ Murda took to the decks while Smol was on the drum set. The group intertwined tracks from their albums such as the runaway hit Rainbow and the spirit shifting Piano Song with the live drum set leaving most people in awe. After about 30 minutes on the decks, the duo got the crowd going as they do in other shows, when they showed off their nimble feet especially to the track Fortune Teller.
They left the stage a little after 3AM with hordes of people crying out for Black Motion to get back on stage. The duo was escorted to the VIP, situated on the right side of the stage, where the bouncers, who on the night were a nuisance to themselves and the paying public, started harassing those in the VIP who had paid $50.
Revellers wanted to get a closer look at the stars and take pictures but could not do so as after about 10 minutes in the VIP, Black Motion was taken out of the VIP section and whisked away in waiting vehicles. The VIP section was too far from the stage and people could not see what was going on and when Black Motion got onto stage, the revellers merely shifted to the front of the stage.
This caused security headaches for the police and some people in the crowd ended up jumping the barricade at the front, while looking for a way of gaining access to the VIP section. Entering the venue was also a headache and if one left the venue, they would also wait for long outside to gain access as there was an inexplicable delay.
As the night wore on and binging increased by the beer, one had a rude awakening; there were no ablution facilities for general ticket holders. Revellers had to resort to relieving themselves at various secluded spots around the venue, which was especially risky for women as they could get robbed or worse raped.
The party atmosphere started off earlier on in the night with Afro Soul musician Mzoe 7 getting the appreciative crowd into the mood. The Kwasa Kwasa hit-maker’s performance was filled with energy with DJ Skaiva backing him. Thereafter it was a DJs battle as the spin masters, DJs Slimzer, Kead Wikead, Liz, Flavour and Crazy Black, did their best to outwit each other on the decks.
Even the MC of the day, Babongile Sikhonjwa, took over the decks before DJ Flavour and played an assortment of old school kwaito hits.
