A 25-member squad from the Zimbabwe National Army has left the country for Botswana where they will compete in the Kazungula Bridge Marathon set for this Saturday.

The team, representing the army’s athletics wing, Black Rhinos Athletics Club, is expected to take part in various race categories at the event, including the full 42.2km marathon, the 21.1km half marathon, as well as the 15km and 8km races.

Among the notable athletes in the squad is seasoned distance runner Wellington Allington Varevi, who will compete in the 21km race as part of his build up to the Durban International Marathon scheduled for May.

Varevi said the Kazungula race will play a key role in his preparations as he transitions to longer distances.

“I will be using the forthcoming marathon as preparation for other events slated for this year. I have moved from the 10km race to the 21km, with the main target being the 42km Durban International Marathon,” Varevi said.
