BLACK Rhinos strengthened their grip on the MCM Estates Northern Region Soccer League promotion race on Sunday after beating Zambezi Gas & Coal 1-0 away while closest rivals Harare City dropped two points in Karoi.

Harare City were held to a goalless draw by Karoi United, leaving Rhinos four points clear at the top as the race for the sole Premiership ticket enters its closing stages.

Rhinos have 53 points from 27 matches and have built their challenge on the tightest defence in the league, conceding just 11 goals.

They have also lost only twice this season as they push for a return to the Premier Soccer League.

Harare City are second on 49 points and can ill-afford further dropped points with Rhinos setting the pace.

The Sunshine Boys have scored 29 goals and conceded 14 in their 27 matches.

Ngezi are third on 44 points after recording 11 wins, 11 draws and five defeats and remain within touching distance of the leading pair.

Chingwere also kept their hopes alive on Sunday with a 1-0 victory over Shamva Mine, a result which lifted them into the top five.

Their leading striker Brian Kwaramba, who also tops the league’s scoring charts, believes they are not out of the promotion race yet.

“We are getting there step by step. We hit the right form at the right time,” Kwaramba said.
