ZIMBABWE international defender Blessing Moyo has finally joined South African Premiership side Maritzburg United after protracted talks between his club Harare City and the Team of Choice over the former Dynamos player’s price tag.
There were growing fears that Moyo, who had already agreed personal terms with the club, would be forced to return home as Harare City seemed to be uninterested in the deal.
But, the Sunshine Boys who had initially refused to take the R400 000 offer for the former Dynamos utility man, finally let go of the 22-year-old yesterday after the Super Diski team topped up R100 000 for Moyo’s permanent move to the club.
Moyo was unveiled by his new club at a press conference in Pietermaritzburg yesterday afternoon along with 12 other new acquisitions for the 2016 /2017 season who also include red-hot midfielder Bryce Moon and defender Bevan Fransman.
Harare City secretary-general Mathew Marara confirmed Moyo’s move.
“I can confirm that Blessing Moyo has joined Maritzburg United on a permanent basis after Harare City and Maritzburg United reached common ground today (yesterday).
“We wish the player all the best in his new role at Maritzburg United. We were more concerned about his welfare that’s why we seemed to be dragging our feet.
“Of course, we will miss him at the club, but we are not recruiting anyone from outside the club to fill his place. We already have equally good players for the position like Munyaradzi Diro-Nyenye,” he said.
Maritzburg United survived relegation by the skin of their teeth last season and are determined to fight for their place in the top-flight this coming season according to the team’s chairman, Farook Kadodia.
“We had a very unlucky, frustrating, tragic and stressful season. You will realise as we present the new players to you that we have done our best to secure quality players within our budget,” he said at the unveiling ceremony.
Moyo joins another Zimbabwean international, Evans Rusike, who is in the Maritzburg United books.
The 21-year-old right back speaking from Pietermaritzburg yesterday said it felt great to have fulfilled his dream to move to greener pastures.
“It feels great to be here. Football is the same here with what I have seen at Harare City or Dynamos, but the main difference is the facilities.
“I just want to do my best and have a good season here,’’ Moyo said.
