Blitz on motorists to curb accidents

The section’s spokesperson, Inspector Tigere Chigome, recently said a lot of accidents were occurring at traffic intersections.
“We have deployed our officers to monitor all activities at the traffic intersection lights. It is necessary for motorists to drive through when it is only clear and not to cause congestion especially during peak hours.
“All those found doing this are going to appear before the courts which will have the final say,” Insp Chigome said.
The latest developments come in the wake of a clampdown on motorists caught using cellular phones behind the wheel.
New regulations also empower officers to check the cellular phone of a driver involved in an accident to determine whether or not the mishap was a result of operating the communication device.
Last month Insp Chigome said officers had been deployed countrywide to arrest errant drivers.
He said his section was taking serious steps to curb the practice. These are the major causes of major road traffic accidents. The Government introduced regulations criminalising the use of cellular phones by motorists following an upsurge in road traffic accidents.
Although the measures had been in place for years, police cited manpower shortage as an impediment to implementing them.
