OK Mart Bulawayo and Bulawayo Motoring Club (BMC) will hold the city’s last public drag race for the 2014 season at the Victoria Falls Road Circuit today. The event is supported by OK Mart Bulawayo who will be promoting the launch of their 2014 Christmas line specials. They will hand out vouchers to new and old drag racing competitors.

BMC vice-chairman Zane Shah said this was a significant move by the corporate sector to support the sport.

“BMC welcomes the coming on board of OK Mart as a partner and we encourage drivers that wish to compete to come and do so in a safe and controlled environment giving significance to our theme ‘Race Legal,’ ” he said.

Despite the fact that this will be the last public drag race on their calendar, BMC will also hold their most prestigious racing event, which is the 45th anniversary of the Three Hour Endurance Race on December 6.

Jimmy Zevgolis, Darren Pragji, Terry Allbery, Aiden White, Zane Shah, Hussain Rahman, Ian Gutherless, Dave Marsburg and Michael Macdonald are some of the drivers expected to take part in the 402m race.

Drag racing is over a distance of 402 metres from a stationary position and the first one to cross the line when the lights go green is the winner of the race.

Each competitor sets a minimum of three qualifying times and these are placed in order from the slowest to the fastest for qualification into the knockout round.

Bulawayo racer Tim Schultz was injured in the superbike race at the national championships and will not be taking part as he is still under treatment.
