FOLLOWING his nomination for the Player of the Season award at the 2023/ 24 Botswana Football Association (BFA) Awards, Warriors forward Daniel Msendami says he is grateful to his former club Jwaneng Galaxy who provided him with a stage to showcase what he is made of.
Now with Marumo Gallants of South Africa, the 23-year-old Zimbabwe international has been nominated for the top gong along with Galaxy teammate Thabang Sesinyi, who finished as the league’s top goal scorer, and Township Rollers’ Mosha Gaolalolwe.
“I want to thank Jwaneng Galaxy for giving me a chance to showcase my talent. I feel honoured to be one of the nominees for such a big accolade. It speaks volumes of what I did for my former club and my potential. This naturally motivates me to aim higher. I will keep on working hard as I seek to adjust well at my new club Marumo Gallants in South Africa. Football will always have its challenges but one should have the spirit of always being a winner,” added Msendami.
Msendami played a crucial role in Jwaneng Galaxy’s double win, securing the Botswana league championship and Orange FA Cup. He was deservedly named the Orange FA Cup Player of the Tournament.
Msendami had an outstanding 2023/24 season, contributing to 28 goals with 12 goals and 16 assists for Jwaneng Galaxy. The Zimbabwean international, a former Highlanders fringe player, was recently highly sought-after talent, attracting attention from numerous clubs throughout the region who were eager to sign him.
He was a target for Tanzania giants Simba SC and TP Mazembe of DRC. Marumo Gallants emerged victorious in the race to sign the Zimbabwean star.
It has been reported that the striker eventually decided to join Marumo Gallants, a team that was playing in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, South Africa’s second-tier league, last season.
Super Diski outfits SuperSport United and AmaZulu FC were also reportedly fly-fishing to acquire Msendami’s services. The move to the lesser-known South African club is seen as a somewhat unexpected choice, considering the interest from the more established Simba SC and TP Mazembe.
Msendami’s decision to join Marumo Gallants is believed to be driven by his desire for consistent playing time, which he may have struggled to secure at the bigger clubs like Simba SC and TP Mzembe.
He has also earned praise from former Warriors youth international Nqobizitha Masuku. Masuku heaped praise on his ex-Highlanders and Jwaneng Galaxy teammate, Msendami whom he said made a wise move by joining newly promoted South Africa’s Premiership side Marumo Gallants.
“I think Msendami made a very bold and wise decision. He openly told me while we were in Botswana that while he has done well, he still needs to grow by playing for a team that will give him game time. He said at times it’s not all about being part of big clubs because a player’s profile needs to grow by having regular game time day in and day out,” said Masuku, who also had stints at Bantu Rovers, FC Platinum, and a brief one in Zambia.
He added: “Msendami’s sentiments really struck me because look at TP Mazembe, they will always have gifted players that make about three to four solid teams. We have seen players from Zimbabwe finding it hard at Simba SC and even at high-profile South African clubs. I praise Msendami for his decision and I wish him well.”
