Bodies of dozens recovered from Lake Malawi

In another development, a Sri Lankan refugee boat with 200 people believed to be on board capsized off Australia’s remote Christmas Island yesterday, and Western Australia police commissioner Karl O’Callaghan said a “large number” were feared to have perished.

In the Malawi incident, police spokesman Davie Chingwalu said, “As of today (yesterday), 47 bodies have been recovered,” adding that they had been buried in mass graves “because the bodies had decomposed”.

Chingwalu said the accident is believed to have happened on Monday night but only came to light on Tuesday morning when villagers and police “saw dead bodies floating on the lake and a boat floating upside down”.

Search operations are still under way for more bodies or possible survivors, Chingwalu said. — AFP.
