THERE is no break for local professional bodybuilders as the athletes are again expected to be in action this afternoon for the Bulawayo Classic body-building contest.
The athletes were on the podium last weekend contesting in the Harare Classic and barely had time to rest before heading for the City of Kings for another event.
South Africa-based Edward “Gearbox” Mutero, who won the Harare Classic, is confident he will continue from where he left and expects to take the coveted crown.
“I was born a winner and winning is all I know. I am ready for the Bulawayo challenge and I am not going to rest until the Zimbabwe Nationals’ which has eluded me for a long time.
“I think it’s my time and I am grateful that the judges did not look much into stature but rather stage presentation. I was on a strict diet for two weeks and it helped me and I will continue.”
Mutero last week upstaged favourites Noah Dzvokora and Gideon Teguru.
“There are huge athletes who were on stage and at first I thought well this is a competition and I should believe in myself and I did just that. For the Bulawayo contest, I think it will be a walk-over for me as I now have the confidence,” he said. Nomathamsanga Phiri, who also won last week’s tournament in the women’s category, is also hopeful of repeating the feat. Under the guidance of Tafara Taruona, Phiri will be up against Lynnette Tom, who has dominated the women’s bikini fitness for several years.
“Modelling fitness is a lifestyle to me and I have managed to improve by beating Tom who has been doing well in the past events. There is tough competition but after my win last week it will drive me to do even better.
“I am ready for the Bulawayo Classic and I am getting encouragement from my coach Taruona, who always pushes me to work hard,” said Phiri.
