POLICE in Mutare are investigating a suspected murder case after the body of an unidentified man, with a stab wound on the right side of his rib cage, was found under a sewage pipe along the Nyamauru River in Dangamvura, Mutare.

The discovery of the body has sent shockwaves throughout the usually tranquil Dangamvura community, especially among the residents of Homeownership and Area 3.

The area is poorly lit and bordered by thick bushes along the riverbank, raising concerns about public safety.

Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, said investigations were underway to identify the man and the cause of his death.

The man’s body was discovered by Wayne Sabamba who was walking on a footpath along the riverbank near the Depression Complex Bridge, close to the Methodist Church in Zimbabwe, while on his way to work in Mapipe.

Sabamba reported the matter to Dangamvura Police Station.

“Police in Dangamvura are investigating a suspected case of murder following the discovery of a body beneath the main sewage pipe that connects Homeownership and Area 3.

“The deceased was wearing a long-sleeved shirt, a white T-shirt, two pairs of black and grey jeans, and black safety shoes,” he said.

Assistant Inspector Chinyoka added that signs of foul play were evident on the body.

“Our officers observed bloodstains near the body and a stab wound on the right side of the ribcage. Bruises were also visible on the deceased’s right hand, which could be signs of a struggle.

“A sharp object may have been used in the attack.”

He said the clothes of the deceased were soiled and money amounting to US$22 and ZWG20 was found in his right trousers pocket.

“Bruises were also observed on the right hand. Additionally, a stab wound was identified on the right side of the now deceased’s ribcage suggesting that the deceased may have been attacked by an unknown accused person using a sharp object.

“The body of the deceased was taken to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital for post mortem,” he said.

Assistant Inspector Chinyoka urged community members to avoid using isolated paths, especially during early or late hours, and to always be alert to their surroundings.

“We are urging members of the public to be vigilant and to avoid using secluded areas, particularly during odd hours.

“We also appeal to anyone with information that might help identify the deceased or assist in our investigations to come forward. Any small detail can be crucial.

“Let us be each other’s keeper. If you see something unusual, do not wait for something bad to happen, report it immediately to the police.”
