THE body of a recently-born baby was pulled out of a sewer pipe in Zengeza, Chitungwiza.

On Tuesday, municipal workers were called after the sewer system was blocked.

The system services four houses in the area.

Police said Nyasha Mapfumo, a resident in the affected area, realised that the sewer system was blocked at his home.

He alerted the Chitungwiza Municipality and requested for help.

A team was dispatched to the scene and the workers opened a manhole at the house.

They found the body of a recently-born baby floating in the sewer water.

Workers retrieved the body.

Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed that police are investigating the matter.

“Police are investigating a concealment of birth case in Chitungwiza,” he said.

Inspector Chakanza said the foetus was taken to Chitungwiza Central Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
