THREE unidentified Mutare men who masqueraded as police officers recently robbed a Nyazura man, whom they had offered a lift from Sakubva to the Central Business District, of $1 500 and clothing items.

Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa confirmed the incident.

“On March 20 at around 1400hrs Claybert Vongai aged 25 from Chidamunyu Village 2 in Nyazura boarded a grey Toyota Altezza that was heading into the city centre at Sakubva Market Place,” he said.

“The vehicle had three men, who were suspected to be travelling together. On the way, the men identified themselves as police officers. They told Vongai that he was under arrest for possession of 16 pairs of second-hand shoes, which were suspected to have been smuggled from the Mozambican border into Zimbabwe.”

Insp Kakohwa said the men drove Vongai to St Dominic’s High School where they robbed him of $1 500, 16 pairs of second-hand shoes and a brown jacket and drove off.

Vongai reported the case at ZRP Mutare Central on the same day.

Police attended the scene, but could not find any evidence to use to track down the robbers.

Insp Kakohwa appealed for information leading to the arrest of the trio to contact their nearest police station.

“Investigations are still in progress,” he said. “We are doing our best to locate these notorious thieves.”
