A BOGUS doctor allegedly killed a woman after performing an illegal surgical operation at a house in Seke.
Police allege that Douglas Mutore of Chitungwiza approached 51-year-old Magret Gwamura in Mbare on Saturday and claimed he was a medical doctor who could remove a goitre from her throat.
Ms Gwamura was taken to a private house in Unit D, Seke, where Mutore allegedly performed the operation. Police said the procedure went wrong, resulting in Ms Gwamura’s death.
Investigating officers recovered blood-stained bandages around the dead woman’s neck, a bucket containing blood-stained bandages and instruments allegedly used during the operation.
Containers of used medication were also found near the body.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said Mutore was arrested on murder charges.
The police encouraged people to avoid seeking treatment from unlicensed medical practitioners.
“We continue to urge members of the public to avoid consulting unlicensed medical practitioners and those operating from unregistered medical facilities,” said Comm Nyathi.
Ms Gwamura’s daughter, Ms Tiny Nyamudzanga, told The Herald that Mutore had instructed her mother to buy medication and other items required for the procedure.
“We met Mutore in Mbare. He claimed to be a medical doctor and led us to a house in Seke, which belongs to Perpetua Matava.
“Mutore performed the operation and my mother passed away during the process,” said Ms Nyamudzanga. She alleged that after realising that Ms Gwamura had died, Mutore fled, telling relatives that he was going to a nearby pharmacy to buy medicine. Ms Gwamura’s burial expected today at the Nyamudzanga homestead in Njenje Village, Murehwa.
