Bogus pastors in court for fraud

Johannesburg — A man and a woman who claimed to be pastors are facing more than 100 charges of fraud after they swindled money out of unsuspecting victims, police said yesterday.

The 45-year-old man and 41-year-old woman were expected to appear in the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court yesterday, Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.

They were arrested on Monday. The pair had been under investigation for more than one year.

“Several victims reported cases to the police after the suspects offered several professional services, including pastoral care and counselling, while they were not registered for those professions,” Dlamini said.

Dlamini said the pair had also pretended to be pastors for the Soldiers for Christ church in Pretoria, where they had rented an office.

Several documents had been seized.

The Pretoria Central family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit is appealing to victims who may have been ministered by the suspects to come forward.

The church could not immediately be reached for comment. – News24.
