ZIMBABWE National Army cricket team, White Rhinos, got a major boost ahead of their maiden home series against a visiting Namibia Defence Forces cricket team after receiving playing equipment from Zimbabwe Cricket yesterday.

White Rhinos are scheduled to host Oshiponga Cricket Club in a tri-series that will also involve another Zimbabwean side, Methane, at Takashinga Sports Club starting this Saturday.

Zimbabwe Cricket yesterday welcomed White Rhinos at the kits presentation function held at Harare Sports Club, where the cricket authorities reiterated their commitment to the development of the sport in the country. ZC director of cricket, Hamilton Masakadza, described the marriage with White Rhinos as the beginning of a long-lasting relationship.

“It is with great excitement that we witness the armed forces showing a keen interest in cricket, a sport that unites us all.

“As the governing board of cricket in the country, we are thrilled to heed to the call to assist White Rhinos. The collaboration between the armed forces and the cricket community is a testament to the power of sport in bringing together people.

“The Zimbabwe Defence Forces will be hosting Namibia Defence Forces and today marks the start of a special relationship between Zimbabwe Cricket and White Rhinos. I can safely say that we are committed to supporting White Rhinos’ endeavours,” said ZC director of Cricket. In her acceptance speech, White Rhinos chairperson, Colonel Tendai Makuyana revealed that the sponsorship will go a long way in making the team a force to reckon with.

“This sponsorship will go a long way in motivating the White Rhinos cricket family to aim higher in our quest to make the team a cricket powerhouse in the domestic cricket arena of Zimbabwe, regionally and internationally.

“This benevolent gesture is a deserved acknowledgment of White Rhinos’ efforts at popularising the sport at the grassroots level and developing raw talent. The gesture is sincerely appreciated by the Zimbabwe National Army,” said Colonel Makuyana.

She revealed that the institution was making strides in popularising the sport among its members.

“Allow me to say that in the army we have made deliberate efforts to develop cricket by popularising the sport among our members at formation and unit levels in the provinces and districts in the country,” said Makuyana.
