GOVERNMENT is fast-tracking the drilling and installation of solar-powered boreholes to ease water challenges in rural and urban areas.

At least 2 000 solar panels were delivered yesterday to power boreholes that are part of the Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme, and which are being delivered on a non-partisan basis.

One of the contracted companies Prevail Group International said they will be locally assembling their solar panels to fast track the programme.

Prevail International general manager Ms Tendai Sithole said the solar panels that are expected to expedite the drilling of the boreholes.

“On this particular consignment we are targeting 2 000 sites. The panels that we have here are enough to implement 2 000 solar powered boreholes and horticulture gardens,” she said.

Ms Sithole added: “We do have more equipment coming, it is not a once off thing but something going on and we have been managing to achieve targeted boreholes assigned to us.”

Ms Sithole also said they have made significant progress through installing solar powered boreholes and horticulture gardens across all regions of the country so far.

“We continue with that pace which is the reason why we feel that bulk buying would be very critical. We have different teams that are being dispatched continuously to different parts of the country almost on a daily basis including qualified plumbers and electricians,” she said.

Ms Sithole said they are also training people that are in the rural areas on how to do the installations themselves.

“We are recruiting and training in the rural areas on the specialised services that we need to do a complete solar powered installation and irrigation garden services,” she said.
