THE late former Highlanders board member Jonathan Sayi Moyo was buried at Lady Stanley Cemetery in Bulawayo yesterday with speaker after speaker describing him as a principled man.
Moyo (80) died at Mater Dei Hospital on Friday after a short illness, having been admitted for post operation care.
He had a knee operation three weeks ago, but his condition deteriorated and was readmitted to the hospital on Thursday last week before passing away the following day.
“Moyo never hid anything; was somebody who loved whatever he was doing, especially Highlanders. If you wanted to fight with him, say anything bad about Highlanders, lapho wawuzazibonela,” said Highlanders’ board chairman Luke Mnkandla addressing mourners at Brethren-in-Christ Church.
He said Highlanders had agreed to have a historical documentary about the club and Moyo was one of the fountains of knowledge, as he knew a lot about the club.
“We now don’t even know who will help us achieve that dream of documenting this rich history of the club,” said Mnkandla.
A devout Christian, Moyo’s funeral service was attended by scores of grieving church members as well as present and former Highlanders’ executive committee members, board members and former players.
Moyo was born in Ntunte, Filabusi, under Chief Maduna and attended Wanezi Mission before proceeding to Mtshabezi where he did his teacher training.
He taught in Filabusi before moving to Harare in the 1960s where he worked for various entities that include the Ministry of Education and Speciss College.
He then joined the Rhodesia Bank (Rhobank), which became Zimbank at independence.
Moyo also dabbled in politics and was a member of Zapu and led some of its branches.
He is the father to famed radio personality Brenda Moyo.
