Bosso election date set

The elections are set for 3 February.

Incumbent vice-chairman Sikhanyiso “Friday” Moyo and acting treasurer Jerry Sibanda are expected to contest for the positions.

Sibanda took over from Odiel Nkomo in October last year after the latter resigned after irregularities were exposed over the way the club’s finances were being handled.

The Highlanders board advised its members about the elections in an advertisement run by a weekly paper yesterday.

“In conformity with the provisions of the constitution elections for office bearers will be conducted separately from the AGM business, on Sunday the 3rd of February at 10am at the Highlanders Sports Club.

“Aspiring candidates must obtain appropriate forms from the Club Office, 50 Robert Mugabe Way, Bulawayo, for which a refundable fee of $100 is payable. Closing date for submission of the completed forms will be Saturday, 19 January 2013 at 12 noon,” read the notice.

Any aspiring candidate has to be nominated by one club member and also have their form signed by 10 substantive members.

The positions which are not being contested are that of chairman Peter Dube, secretary Andrew Tapela and Charles “Six-One” Moyo, a committee member.

The trio was voted into office last year.

Already names are being touted for the positions up for grabs with Moyo facing competition from Harare-based Mgcini Mpofu, Joel Mahlangu and Nkosi Ncube.

It is the treasurer’s position which is of key interest to the Highlanders family as they want someone who they can trust to handle the club’s funds.

Last year, before the then treasurer Nkomo resigned in a huff, it was established that Highlanders could have been prejudiced of as much as $37 000 from gate takings after figures were doctored.

In their report to Highlanders, Grant Thornton Auditors noted that there were discrepancies between what Nkomo had recorded as match day earnings and figures obtained from the Premier Soccer League.

Gatetakings have in the past been the club’s cash cow.

Even after Nkomo’s resignation, the board remained mum on the issue but the matter is likely to be addressed during the club’s annual general meeting set for 27 January.

So far, Sibanda is the only person who has made public his intentions to contest the treasurer’s post.

More candidates are however, expected to come up in the next 14 days.
