THE mood around Highlanders right now is part excitement, part quiet desperation.
With 19 title-less years weighing heavily on the club and its fans, Bosso is chasing reinforcements, but keeping its cards close to the chest. The transfer window closes on July 31, and the big question across
Bulawayo is: who’s coming in to save the season?
Acting club chief executive officer Kindman Ndlovu confirmed on Monday that Highlanders are actively pursuing several players, but won’t reveal names yet.
“As a club we have made several enquiries on some players at local clubs that are part of our coach’s wish list, and the pursuits are ongoing,” said Ndlovu.
Rumours are swirling in the city. Trusted striker Obriel Chirinda, long admired since Brito Baltemar’s time in charge, is believed to be still on Bosso’s radar. Former midfield enforcer Nqobizitha Masuku’s name is also doing the rounds as a possible returnee.
Either player will bolster the squad that many fans feel lacks the edge needed to reclaim former glory.
Highlanders’ inability to consistently attract top talent, largely due to financial constraints, has stretched their league title drought to nearly two decades, the longest since they joined the top flight in 1971.
Despite growing fan pressure, Ndlovu insisted that the club won’t jeopardise negotiations by going public too soon.
“For now I cannot disclose names of players we are targeting as this may jeopardise our efforts,” he said.
Meanwhile, Harare based Scottland have asked about forward Mason Mushore, who is set to travel to the Czech Republic for trials.
“Yes, Scottland formally enquired on the transfer availability of Mason during this transfer window.
We informed them that Mason has attracted interest from a European club and is focused on that potential move for now,” Ndlovu said.
There’s a silver lining for Bosso fans, with financial backing from Wicknell Chivayo, Highlanders have US$50 000 available for signings, offering hope that at least a few of these targets will land at 50 Robert Mugabe Way before the window is closed.
