Highlanders Masters 9–3 Matavhela Masters
BULAWAYO football fans were treated to a vintage show at White City Stadium’s B Arena on Saturday as Highlanders Masters thumped visiting Matavhela Masters of Limpopo Province, South Africa.
The home side rolled back the years with a 9–3 demolition job, led by evergreen Hebert Dick, who banged in five goals in a dazzling display that reminded fans why he was once one of the finest defenders-turned-strikers in local football.
Dick wasn’t alone in the party. Siza Khoza, Gift Lunga (Snr), Collin Nyambiya and Mpumelelo “Makwee” Moyo each joined the fun with a goal apiece in the one-sided friendly played under the blazing Bulawayo sun.
The South Africans, who trailed 2–0 at the break, found the target through Mbuli Tshisudzungwane (2) and Fanta Kwinda, but their efforts were not enough to stop the Bosso Legends’ dominance.
Former players’ association secretary Itai Masawi hailed the match as more than just a friendly.
“It was a good afternoon. We enjoyed ourselves. It is good to use sport to promote cultural and football ties with teams from neighbouring countries. Funds permitting, we look forward to a reciprocal trip,” said Masawi.
Among the Highlanders old guard were Douglas Mloyi, Simon Sibanda and Carrington Ndebele, while the terraces were graced by familiar faces such as
Saul Gomani, Sam Sibanda, Alexander Phiri, Dumiso Vundla, Bishop Moyo, Kenneth Dzowa, Dumisani Nyoni and Allen Ndlovu.
For a few golden hours, White City turned into a time machine, taking fans back to when these legends ruled the pitch and wore the black and white with pride.
