HIGHLANDERS’ coach Erol Akbay believes he has an improved side capable of challenging for the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title this season.

Bosso enjoyed a good season in 2016 and were among the title contenders before ultimately dropping points at crucial moments to lose out to champions Caps United and runners up FC Platinum.

During the PSL break, Akbay made additions to his squad in the form of Siamalonga Charlton, Nkosana Ndlovu, Denzel Khumalo, Tambwe Kalunga, Ebabali Yves, Manuel Obiang Esono, Nedrick Madeya and former Dynamos striker, Rodrick Mutuma. Ray Lunga was also promoted from the development side Bosso 90.

Speaking at the club’s weekly press conference yesterday, Akbay said their experience from last season stands the club in good stead in their hunt for the title.

“Of course we are ready judging by what we have seen against the country’s big teams Caps United and FC Platinum in the off-season. The squad is stronger than last year. Last year everybody had to adapt to my style of play and now they know what I want. Last year our team was not balanced because each time we had to play midfielders as strikers and strikers as midfielders, but this time we have enough material. We have the strikers we want and the midfielders so we are good to go,” said Akbay.

Highlanders will kick-off their league campaign with a derby against municipal side Bulawayo City at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday.

Akbay said they would not underestimate their opponents as they might spring a surprise.

“This year they (Bulawayo City) are a much better team. We had a training game with them and they work very hard. Their players are good compared to last year, so I think they might surprise everybody,” he said.
