HIGHLANDERS intend to start making full use of its sports club starting with the senior team training at the facility while the development side Bosso90 is set to play its home games at the venue this coming season.

Work on getting the training pitches up to standard has been going on for over three years and indications are that this year, Highlanders will finally start using the facilities.

Last year, Bosso junior teams and the Highlanders Royals were using the sports club for their home matches.

The club now wants their development side to play at the venue which the senior team has also been using as their training base for pre-season this year.

The project to revamp the clubhouse grounds started in February 2020 but was stalled by the Covid-19 lockdown when the water pump at some point in time broke down.

Bosso communications officer Nozibelo Maphosa gave an insight into the plans for the sports club.

“We will use the grounds for training for the first team. We will also host our junior team’s games there, which saves us a lot of money. We also hire out the grounds to corporates and individuals. The grounds at the clubhouse have the potential to generate huge income for the club,” said Maphosa.

She said the two boreholes installed at the venue are now fully functional.

“The club has two boreholes. There is plenty of water that’s why we even afford to water the training grounds as well. The city council water was cut long back because, with borehole water, the club didn’t need council water. Then we also have the recently renovated clubhouse, which now attracts people from different walks of life, the renovations brought life to the clubhouse and channeled more traffic which is also a good financial incentive for the club,” said Maphosa.

Municipal water at the facility has reportedly been cut for non-payment and city clubs have had their rates increased from US$300 to US$1200 a month.

Over the years, the Bosso90 project has been a subject of debate with some members suggesting the project needs to be done away with. Some members feel with increasing costs in running the Division One entity, there is a need for the leadership to critically review the costs that come with maintaining the project given the escalating costs.

In the present senior squad, the likes of Prince Ndlovu, Gillian Nyathi and Darlington Mukuli have all passed through the Bosso 90 project.

The clubhouse was once home to the following disciplines under the Highlanders banner: athletics, boxing, basketball, darts, rugby, hockey, chess and volleyball. —@innocentskizoe
