HIGHLANDERS FC members meet tomorrow morning at the club house in Bulawayo where they are expected to endorse a motion for a constitutional review that will pave way for the club to be run as a commercial entity in line with the club licensing requirements.
The changes will see the Board of Directors set up being abolished with members, who will now be the congress, meeting next year to vote into office a five-member board.
They will vote for the executive chairman, the vice and three board members. Peter Dube is the incumbent executive committee chairman.
A constitutional review committee will be appointed, if members endorse the motion, as largely expected and it will be made up of people with various expertise but led by a legal mind.
This committee will be given just under six months to amend the guiding bible so that during the mid year general meeting, members will choose whether to endorse and adopt the new constitution or reject it.
The club would then choose to have a council of elders instead of the Board of Directors and this council will be ceremonial with little powers, largely providing wisdom to the club.
Besides the constitution issue, six aspiring candidates will be presented to the members ahead of the elections on February 7.
The candidates are for the treasurer’s post and the vice chairman held by Donald Ndebele and Mgcini Sibhalo Mpofu respectively.
Charles Ndlovu is challenging Ndebele while the trio of Nkosinathi Ncube, Morden Ngwenya and retired senior army officer Kenneth Mhlophe want to dislodge Mpofu.
This will be the last time, however, that the Highlanders members get to vote for a treasurer as the next elective gathering will be for the chairman, his vice and three board members.
Also at tomorrow’s meeting, members will want to be appraised on the issue of the foreign coach, Erol Akbay, the team’s pre-season preparations as well as who will assist Akbay.
Impeccable sources told Chronicle Sport that former interim coach Amini Soma-Phiri signed his appointment form as substantive Highlanders assistant coach on Wednesday.
The performance of the team’s two commercial entities, Manwele Beer Garden in Makokoba and the Highlanders Sports Bar, which fall under the vice chairman’s portfolio, will also come under the spotlight.
