BOSSO VS DEMBARE: DO YOU REMEMBER MUSAREKA JENITALA?

Limukani Ncube

Ahead of Sunday’s PSL blockbuster clash between Zimbabwe’s two football giants — Highlanders Football Club and Dynamos Football Club — memories come flooding back.

Do you remember Musareka Jenitala?

The electrifying winger whose blistering pace and dazzling dribbles would send shockwaves through Barbourfields Stadium whenever Bosso and DeMbare locked horns in the early 2000s.

The moment the Dynamos faithfuls at the Mpilo End erupted into their heavy chants: “Zvinorema……” and the famous one, “DeMbare muka muka iwe!”

Jenitala would come alive. He would literally get amahlwayi (leg rattles) back on. His feet would dance, defenders would scatter, and Bosso supporters would suddenly grow nervous.

In the VIP enclosure, whispers would spread:

“Saphela. Kwasiqeda oku Jenitala. Loku Murape lakho sokuvukile.” (We are finished. Jenitala is destroying us. Murape has also awakened.)

But Bosso supporters never stayed quiet for long. After a couple of near misses by Dynamos, with Highlanders goalie Tapuwa Kapini back at his theatrics, the legendary Soweto End would rise the thunderous response:

“Ng’lamlela, ng’lamlela mampa besibulala!” (loosely translated, intervene, stop the fight they are killing us).  A song that shook the stadium and reminded everyone that this fixture is more than a football match — it is history, passion, culture and pride.

As the giants prepare to meet again this Sunday, one question remains:

Which players will write the next chapter of Zimbabwe’s greatest football rivalry?
