THE stalemate between Kelvin Kaindu and Highlanders is continuing with the executive reportedly waiting on him to come out in the open regarding his position as the team’s coach. The Zambian gaffer reportedly quit verbally on Monday and has not been attending training sessions.
However, he still has not put his resignation in writing, leaving the executive in an awkward legal position, as they cannot appoint someone else to take over.
Yesterday the Highlanders leadership held a meeting with him to try and finalise his package, but they failed to reach a consensus as the Zambian told them that he wants to consult his advisors.
“The club’s leadership is trying its best to resolve this matter before it gets out of hand. I can say there’s progress because it seems there’re some things which both parties agree on but it’s only a matter of time. The club asked the coach to be clear about his position whether he has really stepped down like he said at the beginning of the week or not. It was said that if he’s still in, then he should be at training and that is when he became open and informed the club that he wants to consult first and will get back to the club,” said a reliable source.
Chronicle Sport has it on good authority that the exit package could be at least a quarter of the $60,000 that they would have paid the coach in the event that they fired him.
The severance package includes clearing outstanding allowances and some match related bonuses.
Highlanders are also negotiating to pay Kaindu at least a month’s salary and there are airfares that the coach used to travel for his overseas training programmes as well as to Zambia for the Caf A Licence that the club wants reviewed.
Having faced litigation for terminating contracts of their former coaches like Madinda Ndlovu and Philani Mabhena, Bosso are delicately handling the Kaindu issue and have sought expert legal advice on the matter as they want to avoid plunging the club into similar gaffes.
Both parties have indicated that they want to resolve the matter amicably with a close confidante of Kaindu saying they are not fighting Highlanders.
“Kaindu is not angry at all about the proceedings and is handling the matter very well. All that he wants is to leave the club in a cordial manner because it’s here that he’s laid a foundation for his coaching career. Just like Highlanders, he wants the matter to be resolved in earnest so that he can also move on. It’s not like he wants to cling on to the job,” said a source.
He is expected to update the club about his stance before the build up to their next league match against Caps United.
Efforts to get his comment and Highlanders chief executive, Ndumiso Gumede on the five-day stalemate failed last night as their mobile phones were not reachable.
