IT’S taken longer than initially expected.
Highlanders are yet to begin work at their gold claim in Inyathi.
At the club’s mid-year meeting, club chairman Johnfat Sibanda told members they had acquired a mining licence, registered as a mining company and carried out surveys at the claim.
He said they had gone on to pay for services of a geologist for a bankable geological report.
At that time, he revealed they had set up a mining committee to make sure work moves faster.
However, Zimpapers Sports Hub understands two members of the committee have quit their roles owing to the lack of progress since the committee was set up.
Asked on the progress on the mine, Bosso communications officer Nozibelo Maphosa did not shed much light on the progress being made at the mine.
“I can confirm that there are two members of the mining committee who resigned in April.
“However, a lot of paper work has been done with regards to the mine itself,” said Maphosa.
President Mnangagwa awarded Highlanders the claim in 2020 as part of empowering the club to enable Bosso to expand their revenue generation streams.
The mine breakthrough came at a time when Highlanders were celebrating 95 years of existence and was a perfect present from the Head of State and Government.
The Government, through the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development, approved relevant paperwork for Bosso to start operations at their gold claim in December 2020.
With so much potential in the mining industry, Highlanders stand to benefit and expectations are that they will use the proceeds from the mine to set up a strong base for junior development, manage and upgrade their facilities, which include the clubhouse, offices and camping house in Luveve.
Sibanda’s term is coming to an end this year and Highlanders are going for elections in February.
Three posts will be at stake with the other two being Morgan Dube’s secretary-general post and the committee member position held by Mgcini Mafu.
It is expected that the mining venture will assist the club compete for players with the rest and grow its brand and real estate investments. —@innocentskizoe
