ZIMBABWE bowls veteran Denis Streak will lead the national team at the Africa States Bowls tournament in Botswana later this year.
The tournament, set for September 6-13, will have more than six countries competing in all the bowling disciplines.Streak was selected to be part of the Zimbabwe side following his fine performances this year. He was at his usual best during the Masters tournament at Highlands Sports Club where he lost only two games out of the nine he played.
He has represented the country in international competitions for many years.
Bowls queen Kerry Craven is once again the skip for the women’s national side.
Craven was the skip at last year’s Africa States and the Zimbabwe team won silver and bronze medals.
In the men Fours, Zimbabwe will be represented by Streak, Masters runner-up Tom Craven, Mashonaland champion Clive Robertson and Masters champion Jono Evans. The Trips team will have Craven, Robertson and Terry Bowes.
In the Pairs Streak and Evans will fly the national flag while Terry Bowes will play in the Singles. The Zimbabwe team was selected after the three-day Masters Bowls competition which was exclusive to the country’s top 10 bowlers in the men and women’s sections.
Bowls Zimbabwe president Malcolm Evans described the team as one of the strongest sides they have sent in recent years. “I must say this is a good team and they are a stronger side than some of the sides we have produced before.
“I am sure they will make the nation proud at the competition.”
Some of the countries expected to take part include Namibia, Malawi, Zambia, South Africa and hosts Botswana.
