REIGNING WBF Super Flyweight All Africa champion Tinashe Majoni suffered a set-back after losing to Tanzania’s Mchanja Yohana in a non-title bout in Dar es Salaam on Sunday night.

The eight-round contest went the distance, with Yohane claiming a unanimous decision after a competitive slugfest.

The defeat snapped Majoni’s four-fight winning streak.

“Sometimes we fall to rise again. Even a catapult is drawn backwards to move forward. We take the lessons and grow,” Majoni said. Originally scheduled for February 14, the bout was deferred by a day and took place just before midnight on a packed international card featuring fighters from Uzbekistan, Nigeria, Uganda, DR Congo, Malawi and Namibia.

Majoni, who fights out for Otto Boxing Club, failed to overcome the technical superiority and experience of the higher-ranked Yohana.

“You always want to win, but every fight is part of the journey. This was about learning and sharpening key aspects as we prepare for bigger opportunities,” he added.

According to his camp, the bout was a deliberate step up in competition aimed at refining the continental champion’s skills and improving his global ranking.

“Majoni has strong prospects. We are mapping his path carefully with a global breakthrough in mind,” said Brian Chinogara, communications officer for Otto Boxing Club.

“This high-level exposure will be crucial in his pursuit of world title contention.”

Majoni turned professional in 2019 and captured the vacant WBF Super Flyweight All Africa title last year with a knock-out victory over Malawi’s Aubrey Masamba.

His camp is weighing up a title defence in the first quarter of the year or a bid for another belt, with an announcement expected soon.
