BOXER Themba Nkomozabo collected gold for Team Zimbabwe when he beat Namibia’s Thomas Mahihanga in the flyweight division. However, it was not a good day in the ring for three other boxers Herbert Rumbidzai, Nelson Mutswayiro and Ndaba Kumbirai who all got silver medals after coming second best to their opponents.
Rumbidzai lost to Itingi Max of Namibia in the light heavyweight category while Mutswayiro lost to Nthuko Ngamo of South Africa in the same category.
In the heavyweight category, Kumbirai came unstuck against the tall and heavy hitter Leite Danilo Aegeb of Angola.
A delighted Nkomozabo thanked his coaches and hoped the medal is the start of better things to come.
“I’m very excited to have won gold for my country, I thank all my coaches for this achievement and I hope this marks the beginning of greater things to come,” said Nkomozabo.
Team manager Petros Masiyambumbi was also pleased although he wished they had won more.
“The boy fought a good fight and he deserved to win the gold medal. It’s very unfortunate that the other boxers could not achieve the same feat but we’re happy with their performance, after all a silver medal is not that bad,” said Masiyambumbi.
