Boxers itching for fights

The two pugilists left amateur boxing when they fought last June but up to today they are struggling to break into the mainstream boxing. In that fight, Ngulube and Sibanda were curtain-raising Thamsanqa “The Tanker” Dube’s non-title fight against Arigoma Chiponda at the Large City Hall.

Dube knocked out Chiponda in the first round after getting the latter with a right hook above the eye.

Ngulube said he was getting rusty and feared that the long layoff would affect his style.

“It’s been sometime since I last fought. I am training hard with the hope of getting a fight. There is nothing as painful as waiting not knowing when my turn to fight will come.

“I am very much eager to fight and sometimes I watch some of the guys at amateur level failing to do what I used to do,” said Ngulube.

The 22-year-old Makokoba boxer has been training at Tshaka Youth Centre under veteran Philip Striker Ndlovu.

His gym mate, Sibanda, said he was contemplating leaving the sport.

“The truth is that I am frustrated and I am considering trying out my luck in soccer because boxing is frustrating. I want to fight and I love the sport but as it is I am failing to get into the ring. I do train sometimes but I am also hooked in football where I play money games in my suburb.

“Don’t be surprised when you see me playing soccer fulltime,” said Sibanda.

Makokoba is known for being home to almost everything with many youths being associated with criminal activities. These boxers are part of the generation that wants to bring a change in Makokoba.
